NEWBURYPORT, Mass. — A Massachusetts sportsmen's club is sure there's something to global warming.
And it has evidence. This winter could be the second straight year it cancels the club's popular annual ice fishing tournament due to a lack of frozen pond water.
The Essex County Sportsmen's Association event was orginally scheduled for last Sunday but temperatures in the 50s postponed it to this Sunday. But the forecast of a major snow storm followed by rain wiped out the rescheduled time.
Now the tournament is planned for Feb. 24 as a last resort date but club officials aren't optimistic.
"I don't see it happening," said Keith Stanwood, tournament chairman. "The days are getting longer, the sun is getting stronger. I think we're essentially dead in the water."
