SALEM, Mass. - The brother-in-law of a Massachusetts congressman has been convicted of running a multimillion dollar illegal Internet gambling operation.

A federal jury returned the guilty verdict on racketeering and several other charges against Daniel Eremian, 61, Monday after six days of deliberation.

Eremain is the brother-in-law of U.S. Rep. John Tierney, D-Mass.

The congressman's wife, Patrice, the sister of Eremain, was convicted last year of aiding and abetting the accused and an older brother in filing false tax returns connected to the illicit gambling business based in Antigua.

The older brother, Robert Eremian, is a federal fugitive on the charges and has not been brought to trial.

Tierney said he had no knowledge of the Internet gambling operation. His wife said she thought her brothers were running a software company.

U.S. Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz said the conviction of Tierney's relative "should serve as a message to those involved with illegal gambling schemes that the government will apply the full weight of its resources to identify, investigate and prosecute individuals who seek to profit from offshore gambling."
