Thieves target used cooking oil

CNHI News Service

ESSEX, Mass. – Is nothing safe anymore? Apparently not to some enterprising thieves in this small town that is popular with tourists.

Vats of used cooking oil were stolen from three Essex restaurants Tuesday night — the second string of similar thefts from some of the same establishments this year.

The oil can be used as an alternative energy source. "It's a commodity, so it's worth money," said Phillip Bruno, general manager of American By-Products, a company that collects used cooking oil.

"This happens when the price of oil goes up."

Bruno said the used cooking oil can be utilized as biofuel for cars or heating systems.

Police said they had no leads.
