Great white shark sighted at mouth of Merrimack RiverCNHI News Service NEWBURYPORT, Mass. — A great white shark snatched a striped bass from a fisherman's line at the mouth of the Merrimack River Friday, the fisherman and other witnesses said. It was the third sighting of a great white shark in Massachusetts coastal waters this summer, but the first time in modern memory that a shark has ventured into river waters that flow into the Atlantic Ocean. The great white shark, popularized in the 1975 movie "Jaws," is one of the ocean's most feared predators. It is seldom seen this far north.
