Tearful Ortiz leaves Sox void

PAUL BILODEAU/Staff photoBoston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz at his first at bat during Game 3 against Clveland Monday. Ortiz's career ended when the Sox were eliminated by the Indians with a three-game sweep.

David Ortiz was shot in the Dominican Republic tonight.

According to ESPN's Enrique Rojas, Ortiz was hospitalized after being shot at an amusement center. Ortiz's father, Leo, confirmed the hospitalization to Rojas.

"They called me to tell me that David is injured and that they took him to a medical center, but they did not tell me how he is or exactly where he was transferred," Leo Ortiz told ESPN.

But the news took a turn for the better after surgery, as Ortiz's father told Dionisio Soldevila, a local journalist, that his son was believed to make a full recovery.

"David Ortiz's father says David is already at rest, there were no affected organs and total recovery is expected," Soldevila's tweet said (via translation).

Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez offered reassuring news a few minutes beforehand, saying his close friend was "out of danger."

The Red Sox told the Eagle-Tribune they had no comment as of 11:00 PM.
