Texas police say a handcuffed man stole a police car, triggering a high-speed chase that ended in a crash with a tractor-trailer on Tuesday.

Police in West Tawakoni, Texas, had taken Brandon Brewer into custody after finding him near an abandoned car on Highway 751 near the neighboring town of Quinlan. Brewer, 26, of Balch Springs, Texas, was wanted on a warrant out of Collin County.

According to a report filed with the Hunt County Sheriff’s Department, Brewer was arrested, and a subsequent search revealed a small bag appearing to contain methamphetamine. A check of the vehicle’s registration showed it had been stolen in Dallas.

Officers handcuffed Brewer and placed him in a squad car, the report said. Brewer then slipped his handcuffs to the front of his body, climbed into the driver’s seat and drove off at a high speed.

The ensuing chase prompted a Hunt County Sheriff’s deputy to set up a roadblock on a nearby county road which briefly detained the fugitive.

Brewer stopped momentarily, and the three pursuing officers got out of their vehicles. Brewer then accelerated the stolen patrol car toward the officers, who all fired shots, though none hit Brewer. Brewer then crashed into a tractor-trailer that was parked nearby.

Brewer was transported to Hunt Regional Medical Center in Greenville where he was treated and released, and then was booked into the Hunt County Jail on one count each of possession of a controlled substance, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, escape from custody, evading arrest in a motor vehicle and aggravated assault on a peace officer, as well as the outstanding warrants for theft and burglary of a building out of Collin County.

Bond was set at $45,000.
